I have been a musician for more than 2 decades already. Gosh, it’s revealing my age! I’m already 25! 😉
As I have been saying to my fellow financial literacy advocates, we can not stay educators of the rest of the Philippine nation with our “boring” methods of teaching if we really want to reach out to every Filipino. We need to be more creative and more entertaining in our approach so that we can be heard and craved by people to be heard again.
That is why in our upcoming Angat Pilipinas Financial Literacy Awards 2015, we’re bringing in our celebrity volunteers like Jojo Alejar, Joyce Burton-Titular, Jao Mapa (why do their names all start in letter “J”???), Miriam Quiambao, etc. as we believe that with their following and showbiz influence, they can be great ambassadors of financial literacy.
I also believe that one of the best mediums to spread the advocacy is through music. In addition to the above-mentioned celebrities, we also invited musicians like the legendary Filipino music advocate Joey Ayala, the Voice Philippines finalist Darryl Shy, multi-instrumentalist folk singer Nityalila, and spoken-word-poetry artist and recently-awarded Female Network’s Amazing Filipina, Kooky Tuason together with her group MonoTemple to perform their originals that sing about money and everything about and around it.
Since I am a rock music enthusiast, let me just share some alternative music songs that sing about money and personal finance. They may not be obvious at first, but believe me they do. Listen! 😉
Silverchair – Tomorrow
You say that money isn’t everything…
Well, I’d like to see you live without it.
You think you can keep on going living like a king…
Ooh babe, but I strongly doubt it!
Pearl Jam – Corduroy
I’ll take the firmest path; ooh, and I must refuse your test
Oh push me and I will resist…
This behavior’s not unique
I don’t want to hear from those who know
They can buy, but can’t put on my clothes.
Pink Floyd – Money
Money… get away.
Get a good job with more pay and you’re oookay.
Money… it’s a gas.
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash
If I Had A Million Dollars – Barenaked Ladies
The Youth – Mukha ng Pera
Oh! Ang tao kapag walang pera’y naprapraning
Di alam ang gagawin
Tatawag sya sa Diyos
Samba dito? Samba doon? Oh Dios ko!
Tulungan N’yo po ako… Oh oh oh
Joey Ayala with Gloc-9, Denice Barbacena, and Silverfilter
Tuwing kinsena at trenta may pasweldo na papel
Nagkaroon ng credit card, pautang na papel
At ng di nakabayad, ang papel ay nabasa
Kumayod, nagsumikap ng maayos at ng dumami ang papel.
Pag wala kang papel, wala kang papel
Hindi ka makaporma, di ka makapapel
Maihahatid ka nya sa heaven o sa hell, papel.
