While we were on a few days of summer getaway in Bohol back in April 2015, I received a call from ANC OnTheMoney. It was about the new schedule for my guesting on the TV show. As you know, I have been postponing the guestings that they have been asking me for the last two years for a few good reasons.
First, I’m out of the country most of the time. Secondly, vacations are sweet and short for an OFW like me. My fellow OFW’s know that spending time with loved ones during their vacation is the ultimate happiness and the most priceless period on the whole year. And visiting loved ones and family members was what I usually did in the past two annual vacations.
This time around, my friend Heinz Bulos of Moneysense/Learning Curve, who partners with ANC OnTheMoney in providing guests for their show, emailed me about accepting the invitation to guest. So yes, I said yes. 😀 Thank you Heinz! 🙂
Before the taping of the interview, I was also able to meet again my sister from another mother so to speak, Miles Semana, who is in charge of entertaining guests at ANC. Here are some of the points I discussed with host Edric Mendoza using the “slides” that they used during the show.
I mentioned about the importance of stewardship. Giving back to God and paying forward to those in need are keys to respecting our hard-earned money.
This mentality kills many geese that lay golden eggs.
Nothing is wrong about ‘pasalubongs’. They are actually symbols of our love and affection for our family members. But we should also prioritize.
Debts also consume the money of many OFW’s.
Beating homesickness by shopping may costly…and deadly.
I also shared what our non-profit organization Angat Pilipinas Coalition for Financial Literacy, Inc. is doing to teach our OFWs about proper money management.

Couldn’t agree more with the common mistakes of OFWs. I myself had a mindset that I should send balikbayan boxes. It does make you feel good about yourself at first but then a realization must follow (hopefully soon enough).
Send balikbayan boxes moderately and for the right reason–that is you want to give within your means while also setting aside for retirement and other financial goals.
