Why Financial Literacy Plays a Major Role in a Growing Nation

Today’s generation is very blessed because they have easy and affordable access to the internet. Through mobile devices, one can easily learn about personal financial management concepts either through paid webinars or free resources available online.

BDO Foundation produced financial education videos for DepEd, OWWA, Phil Army. It tied up with NU to develop learning modules on basic accounting for farmers.

With these in place. learning about money, how it works, and how to manage it is key to helping Filipinos become smart financial decision makers. If every Filipino is on track to achieving personal financial freedom, we are surely on our way to a progressive, first-class Philippines.

Panalo Ang BDO Foundation’s Financial Education Mission!

Back in 2010, our pioneer team at Angat Pilipinas Coalition for Financial Literacy (known then as Angat Bayan) designed a personal financial literacy curriculum that would benefit later on the Filipino youth in marginalized schools and communities, Filipinos working and living overseas, and professionals in the creative scene.

This curriculum is now being used officially by a couple of private schools in Laguna, and several community schools around the country such as in Baseco, Manila, coastal barangays of Taguig, Tacloban City, Marawi City, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, as well as the Taal Lake communities of Mataasnakahoy in Batangas.

Way before the law on Financial Literacy was passed and approved by the Philippine government, we were already teaching personal financial management, entrepreneurship, and investments to Filipino students, out-of-school youth, OFW’s, uniformed personnel, and artists as our contribution to financial inclusion mission.

BDO is one of the first banking institutions in the Philippines that gave Filipinos access to affordable investment to these valuable sectors of the society. BDO’s Easy Investment Plan or EIP has benefited a lot of OFWs and family members, at least from the testimonials of our Angat Pilipinas workshop attendees who have opened their UITF accounts with BDO. Many of them has attended BDO’s free financial wellness seminars as well.

With more Filipinos learning how to invest in financial instruments such as those offered by banks, it’s comforting to know that many are starting to become aware about the importance of securing their future financially.

Financial Literacy Roadshows on the Roll

It takes collective action from government, private institutions, the academe, and non-governmental organizations to help the people become sound personal financial decision maker, disciplined savers and wise spenders, and become productive citizens of the nation as entrepreneurs and investors.

This can only happen through a unified, sustainable educational program that involves family members, churches, schools, LGU’s, and other organizations in partnership with banks and financial institutions.

BDO Foundation’s advocacy on financial literacy could be one of the most comprehensive and collaborative programs currently as they aim to reach out to special segment markets such as the uniformed personnel of the Philippine Army.

We are very excited with this development as our dream of bringing financial education to every Filipino is finally coming true in our lifetime.

Ang gandang pamana nito sa ating kabataan!

Sabi ko naman sa inyo years ago, it can be done!

  1. I really do hope that financial literacy or financial education should be included in all school curriculum. I mean not all are talented when it comes to business and finance(that;s me!) but atleast business/financial educator can give basic teachings to this subject. I’m just glad with today’s technology I can have easy access to learn financial planning or about investments through webinar which you can also find it here https://fincrafters.com/education. This online learning helps me to educate myself with business/finance stuff.
