What is Warren Buffet’s Golden Rule in Investing?

First of all, Warren’s last name is pronounced as ‘Buh-phet’. As in Bah-fet. Not “Booh-fay”. Got it?

Now, who is Warren Buffet?

Warren is an American business mogul, investor and philanthropist. He is considered as the most successful investor of the 20th century. He is also the chairman, CEO and largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway (a holding company that owns Dairy Queen, Fruit of the Loom, etc. and partially Coca-Cola, American Express, and IBM).

Recently, he bought battery legend Duracell in exchange of about $4billion worth ff Procter and Gamble shares that he held for quite sometime. He is consistently ranked among the world’s wealthiest people and was even named in 2012 by Time magazine as one of the world’s most influential people.

Why is Warren Buffet Always a Talk of the Town?

Warren has never written a book of his own. But his few writings and articles and his investing styles have influenced thousands if not millions or investors, shareholders, and likewise wealthy people around the world.

One of his noticeable writings to his shareholders was about a warning against the harmful effects of inflation. He wrote:

“The arithmetic makes it plain that inflation is a far more devastating tax than anything that has been enacted by our legislatures. The inflation tax has a fantastic ability to simply consume capital. It makes no difference to a widow with her savings in a 5 percent passbook account whether she pays 100 percent income tax on her interest income during a period of zero inflation, or pays no income taxes during years of 5 percent inflation.”        —Buffett, Fortune (1977)

What is Warren Buffet’s Golden Rule in Investing?

For our readers who are just new in investing especially in the stock market or pooled funds, you might hear words from experienced traders and investors that Warren isn’t actually investing in stocks. He is actually buying companies.

Well, friends, investing in stocks is actually buying companies. By purchasing shares of companies listed in the stock exchange, you become part of owner of those companies. That is similar to what Warren is doing. It’s just that he is buying shares in millions and billions of dollars.

But remember, Warren started early in life as an investor in the stock market by buying just a very few shares. He also dabbled himself in entrepreneurship. Later on in life, he became an investment salesman and a securities analyst.

So you as a new investor can imitate the Warren Buffet not of today but the Warren Buffet of his earlier years.
