Personal Finance Lessons from “House Husband”

I spent my most of my weekend with my wife and child at home just playing, munching lots of finger snacks, and watching movies from the internet. And of course, we prayed constantly for our loved ones and kababayans back home to be safe from the approaching storm.

I seldom watch Filipino movies but my wife just really likes Judy Ann Santos. Personally, I’ve met Judy Ann in two ocassions in the past. One was during her shoot of a famous sardine brand’s commercial and the other one was in an event we’ve attended in Makati in the late 90’s. Other say she’s a “suplada” but I can say she’s a very simple lady and a very down-to-earth type of person.

So this weekend was spent watching about six English movies and one Judy Ann-Ryan Agoncillo 2011 comedy-drama movie entitled “House Husband”. *The story revolves around a married couple, Mia (Judy Ann Santos) and Rod (Ryan Agoncillo), who have a bunch of problems and endless arguments. Since then Rod has resigned from his job and made Mia find another one, while he takes charge of household chores and their children. (*Wikipedia)

Interestingly, the movie showed scenes inside a bank and an insurance company. There was also a scene where Ryan was offered a job in a commodities trading company.

But here are some personal finance and life lessons we’ve learned from watching this movie:

1) Never ever waste food on the table. You worked hard for it, so teach your kids to savor the blessings they’ve been receiving. Keep your meals simple.

2) Be creative in giving gifts. Recycle old but good and useful items at home.

3) Always keep emergency cash at home. As much as possible, save at least 3 months’ worth of your monthly living expenses. A credit card is not an “emergency cash”. It can only be part of your “emergency fund” if you are able to pay the dues on time.

4) It’s not how much you earn but how much you are able to save and grow from what you earn.

5) Love your job. There are hundreds of other qualified people waiting to replace you if you decide to leave or your employer finds you incompetent for the job.

6) Be practical in life. Don’t rely on your job alone. Find other sources of income. Being a housewife or a house husband is no excuse that you don’t have any source of income.

7) Insure yourself and your family. Aside from emergency fund, you and your family members should have health/medical and life insurance.

8) Be humble. Never waste opportunities that are being offered to you and are coming your way.

9) Don’t keep up with the Joneses. Chances are you will lose most of the things you have if you keep on envying your neighbors’ spending lifestyles.

10) Discuss money problems with your spouse, and the kids as well. They should know what is happening. Solve money problems as a team and make a wise decision based on your discussion.

11) Don’t just keep money in the bank. Make it grow by investing or starting a small business. Going abroad is not the only solution.

12) Whatever happens, your family and your relationships with them that matter most. Give special attention to each one of them. Make them feel they are loved and well taken care of all the time.

13) Don’t forget to pray and give thanks to God for the blessings and the trials. He never forgets and will always give you what you and your family need.

14) Always choose to be happy.

These are just few that comes into my mind. But you can add more and comment below if you were able to come up with more tips after watching the movie below. Happy blessed weekend everyone! Be safe!
